Why Wermers? After serving in World War II, Gerald Leo Wermers married his wartime pen pal, Dorothy Cibulskis, and found work in Aurora, Ill. as a floor covering salesman. Gerald dreamed of starting his own business, and on August 15, 1961, he opened the doors of Wermers Floorcovering in a small town along the scenic Rock River-Dixon, Ill.
While busy raising eight children and continually remodeling their home on South Peoria Avenue, Dorothy and Gerald worked side-by-side to build the business. All of the seven sons-Joe, Gerry, Ed, Greg, Tom, Robert, and Carl-and daughter, Kathy-took turns working in the store over the years. Yet after installing carpets for ten years, it was Gerry who purchased Wermers Decorating Center in 1986.
"Today, we have actually started installing carpet for the third generation," says Gerry. "We served the grandparents when the store first opened, and then the parents, and now the grandkids are decorating homes of their own. It's gratifying to know the next generation is here because of how we treated their parents."
Today, Gerry continues to run the business in the spirit in which it was founded: with strong family values and sound, fair business practices.
